COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The MSPCA announced a fee-free adoption event at several shelters to help cats that stay longer because of health or behavior issues after National Cat Day was observed on Wednesday—events will be held this Friday and Saturday.  Western Mass News
  • United Way of Pioneer Valley stepped in as SNAP benefits began to fall short by offering community pantries in Springfield and Holyoke for families and individuals in need. The UWPV Springfield Cupboard at 1441 Main St. served over 618 people on Tuesday — a 30% increase in use, and agencies are urging community members to donate, volunteer, or hold food drives.  BusinessWest
  • The Valley Bike Share program added its 19th station in Springfield’s Indian Orchard to provide residents with pedal-assist e-bike rentals. City officials said the new station connects the neighborhood to downtown — offering a sustainable option for those without vehicles.  New England Public Media

  • UMass Amherst named Paula Murphy as the new state director of the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center Network (MSBDC), which helps small businesses with free advice and training. CULTURE NEWS

  • The Fiber Festival of New England will be held at the Mallary Complex at ESE on Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Over 150 vendors and nearly 20 workshops will offer wool products and craft demonstrations—tickets will cost $9 for adults and free for children age 12 and under—providing a preview of holiday shopping.  BusinessWest

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • During Winter Weather Awareness week, residents in Springfield are urged to ready their vehicles by checking batteries, fluids, heat and tires while stocking jumper cables+ snow brush, a tow chain, blankets, snacks, and a first aid kit. Officials stress that drivers must clear all snow and ice from their cars before traveling since it is required by law and variable weather may affect road conditions.  Western Mass News

  • Eversource customers in Springfield have less than a month to decide if they will join the new power supply program—officials say the decision period will end soon.  Western Mass News
  • Fire officials across western Mass are urging residents to check the dates on their smoke detectors since models over 10 years old may fail during an emergency — local departments advise replacing outdated alarms to help prevent dangerous situations. They note that working alarms are required by state code and can be found at local hardware stores.  Western Mass News
  • The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts warned that because the shutdown continues, November SNAP benefits will be delayed, putting over 191,000 local residents at risk of food hardship. The group will boost its emergency food response—expanding pantries and meal programs—and urged state leaders to release contingency funds to help families in need.  BusinessWest

HEALTH NEWS

  • With Halloween fast approaching, doctors at Cooley Dickinson Hospital warned that trick-or-treaters must stick together—parents should check costumes for fire risks and ensure children use flashlights when visiting lit homes.   • Dr. Ahmed Siddiqui, the Medical Director at the Cancer Institute at Cooley Dickinson Hospital, explained that many women with dense breasts face a 50–60% chance of a mammogram missing cancer due to blind spots behind the nipple and near the axilla; he advised that screenings and additional tests are key to early detection.  Western Mass News

  • Next summer, soccer fans hope to attend seven FIFA World Cup matches at Gillette Stadium as the ticket lottery enters its second phase; the application period began Monday (open until Friday at 11 a.m.) and a final phase will follow after the December 5th draw (with remaining tickets sold on a first come, first served basis).  Western Mass News
