COMMUNITY NEWS

  • MGM Springfield will usher in the holiday season on Nov. 28 with its annual tree lighting ceremony at Armory Square—marking the opening of Holiday Winter Wonderland with the city's only outdoor skating rink and special appearances by local mascots and Santa Claus. The event will begin at 5:15 p.m.—and will include a welcome program with the MGM team, Mayor Domenic Sarno and a live performance by The Voice semifinalist Madison Curbelo.  BusinessWest

  • Excel Dryer Inc. announced Kim Lynch as its new director of Marketing effective Oct. 20—she brings over 15 years of experience in marketing across retail, finance, and industrial sectors and will lead the company’s brand strategy and growth initiatives.  BusinessWest

  • Springfield Symphony Orchestra will join the Mambo Kings and Camille Zamora for Fiesta Sinfónica, a Latin music concert that will be held on Saturday, Nov. 8 at Springfield Symphony Hall. The event will feature popular songs like Bésame Mucho and Oye Como Va—along with a VIP meet-and-greet on Friday to raise food donations for Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen and Pantry.  MassLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Massachusetts saw a sharp drop in cable TV subscriptions over the past decade from 2.19 million in 2013 to under 1.2 million in December while urban areas like Somerville lost over 70% of subscribers—rural communities reported gains, showing a shift to streaming services.  MassLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bay Path University will host its 13th Annual Cybersecurity Summit, 'Cyber Pathways 2025: AI, Innovation, and the Future of Security,' on Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at Breck Suite in Theinert Hall (on its Longmeadow campus). The summit will show how artificial intelligence can change digital defense, education, and jobs (with a live demo and career panel) and will allow both in-person and online joining.  BusinessWest

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Valley Opportunity Council said heating assistance in Springfield is at risk as the government shutdown continues and families that applied will not get notices due November 1. The council warned that state funds offer only a short-term fix (limited help for those heating with oil, wood or propane) as colder weather approaches.  Western Mass News
  • The Healey-Driscoll administration announced $2.1 million in GROW grants to 34 organizations to train over 300 apprentices in healthcare, manufacturing, clean energy, and life sciences—supported by nearly $2 million in state funds and federal contributions. Among the awardees, the MassHire Hampden County Workforce Board in Springfield will receive $217,500 to train 30 apprentices in healthcare, manufacturing, and behavioral health.  BusinessWest

  • The Springfield Thunderbirds signed Bruins legend Milan Lucic to a professional tryout contract — he played four preseason games with the Blues before suffering a lower-body injury and will try out ahead of their Friday 7 p.m. game at the MassMutual Center against the Bridgeport Islanders.  Western Mass News
