COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The We Love Springfield initiative was unveiled on Thursday at The Armory at MGM Springfield and brings local organizations together to launch new social media pages, a website, and over 28 holiday events starting November 28 until Forest Park's bright nights end on January 4—highlighting local pride.  Western Mass News
  • Girls on the Run Western Massachusetts will host its annual fall 5K event on Sunday, November 23 at Western New England University and expects over 3,000 participants. Participants will start arriving at 9:30 a.m., with warm-ups at 10 a.m.—the run begins at 10:30 a.m. and will include a food drive to benefit the program.  BusinessWest
  • Bishop William Byrne of the Diocese of Springfield visited the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry at St. Mary’s Parish in Westfield on Thursday — asking the community to help fill shelves for people facing food insecurity due to SNAP benefit cuts.  MassLive
  • On Oct. 20, Eastern States Exposition and West Springfield officials presented a $6,000 check to the Boys & Girls Club to fund a technology lab with advanced tools for students. The grant, part of the ESE-West Springfield Trust that has donated over $5 million since 1994 + is one of 34 awarded this year, will boost local youth tech skills + support community learning.  BusinessWest

  • Chef Syron Wheeler opened Top Fusion Smokehouse at 672 Dickinson Street in Forest Park to serve slow-smoked meats with international twists—dishes include jerk chicken empanadas with honey jerk sauce and brisket mac and cheese quesadillas. Wheeler, a Springfield native with 17 years of experience, said the restaurant offers game-day specials and will launch a food trailer in 2026.  MassLive

  • Elena Gervino (senior vice president at Travelers Insurance) has been named chair of Western New England University’s board of trustees. She brings nearly 40 years of law, education and business experience to guide the school’s future (she has served on the board since 2021).  BusinessWest

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rain last month improved drought conditions in western Mass. Officials said that most of Hampden and southern Berkshire counties have returned to normal, but northern Berkshire, Hampshire, and eastern Hampshire counties remain in drought—more rain is needed to fully resolve the conditions.  NewsRadio 560 WHYN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MassDOT closed the Saint James Avenue bridge located over the abandoned rail line near Albany Street for emergency repairs—officials say the work will take a few days.  Western Mass News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mercy Medical Center's Family Life Center in Springfield will temporarily stop maternity and newborn services on Dec. 8 due to staffing shortages—while the Massachusetts Nurses Association criticized Trinity Health for inaction that they say is eroding care for mothers and infants.  MassLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Milan Lucic, a Bruins legend, made his debut with the Springfield Thunderbirds last night at the MassMutual Center. The 37-year-old signed a professional tryout deal after a preseason lower-body injury — and fans are excited to see him bring veteran strength from his nine NHL seasons and a 2011 Stanley Cup win.  Western Mass News
  • The Red Sox designated relief pitcher Luis Guerrero for assignment on Thursday—clearing a spot on the 40-man roster for future minor league prospects ahead of December's Rule 5 draft. Guerrero, a 25-year-old who grew up in the local area and posted a 4.15 ERA in 13 games last season, was one of several players moved in the team's roster adjustments.  MassLive
