  • Springfield residents gathered at the High School of Commerce Open Pantry on Thanksgiving to share a free meal — a small comfort for those struggling with lost SNAP benefits and rising costs after a recent government shutdown. Volunteers prepared turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce to help ease food insecurity in the community.  MassLive
  • La Cucina di Hampden House will host its annual Toy for Joy Night on Monday, Dec. 8 from 3 to 8 p.m. at 1 Allen Street in Hampden—guests who bring an unwrapped toy will get 50% off an entree to help support local children in need during the holiday season.  MassLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • City officials and museum executives gathered this week to celebrate the completed restoration of the historic Kilroy House at Springfield Museums, a building built in 1905 where Dr. Philip Kilroy practiced medicine. Christopher Albrecht of Chris’ Carpentry spent a year restoring its unique thick stained-glass windows (featuring a fleur de lis and shamrock) and repairing its terracotta roof, with an overall project cost of about $800,000 (funded in part by the Community Preservation Act).  MassLive
  • Springfield Museums is hosting its 16th annual Jurassic Gingerbread exhibit today through December 31—featuring over 50 creative gingerbread displays with dinosaur themes, a People’s Choice vote, and special holiday activities across museum attractions.  MassLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas Buddy data from Cheap Insurance shows that drivers in Massachusetts can fill up at lower prices at select stations. In Springfield, a CITGO at 289 Carew St offers gas at $2.68 per gallon — a rate that reflects the competitive pricing seen statewide.  MassLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Sarno sent a letter to Gov. Healey saying Mercy Medical Center will close its Family Life Center on Dec. 8 — a move that may hurt maternity care in Springfield and Western Mass. Patients will still get prenatal and postnatal care at Mercy but must go to Baystate for delivery, and the mayor asked for state help to restore this vital service.  MassLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ambriola Co. and Wegmans have recalled grated Pecorino Romano cheese sold under Locatelli, Boar's Head, Member's Mark and Pinna brands because of possible Listeria contamination; customers in Massachusetts who bought the cheese from Wegmans between Nov. 14 and Nov. 24 should check their refrigerators and return it for a refund + no illness has been reported.  MassLive
