  • The Salvation Army’s 103rd Toy for Joy drive ended December 24, collecting toys, games, and books for children in Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin counties. A local law firm's $2,148 donation in memory of a colleague added to the community effort, with plans in place for next year's drive.  MassLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Springfield residents will ring in the new year at MGM Springfield with a 1920s-themed party called 'Gold and Glamour: A Roaring NYE' starting at 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 — the event features live music, a DJ set, dining options and a champagne toast at midnight with tickets starting at $20.  MassLive

  • John F. Carbin of Westfield challenges state building permit rules that require licensed plumbers for DIY work on his retirement home. He asked the Supreme Court to review the case with help from the Pacific Legal Foundation and awaits action today after previous dismissals in Springfield.  MassLive

  • Stefon Diggs advised the Patriots not to relax after clinching a playoff berth with a nine-catch performance against Baltimore, saying the team must keep up its strong play as it faces the New York Jets later this week.  MassLive
