COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 2025 Toy for Joy drive ended Dec. 24, and thanks to generous community donations, children in Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin counties enjoyed Christmas with new toys while the Salvation Army and Captain Stacy McNeil plan for a bigger campaign next year.  The Reminder
  • Earlier this holiday season, the Indian Orchard Citizens Council held its toy drive, which received a $500 donation from Zaza Green to help provide new toys for 200 children — easing financial strains for local families.  The Reminder

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Hampden correctional officer Leenayhsia Pabon was seriously injured in an off-duty accident in Springfield on Dec. 20 and remains hospitalized in stable but critical condition; donations are accepted (through the county sheriff’s office) to help her and her family.  NewsRadio 560 WHYN

CULTURE NEWS

  • A free family-friendly commemoration of Major General Henry Knox’s Noble Train is set for Jan. 17 at the Springfield Armory National Historic Site, followed by an original musical at 52 Sumner Theater on Jan. 18.  The Reminder
  • Springfield independent designer Justin Haynes will showcase his latest collection at a major awards show. He said the experience is humbling and hopes to bring fresh style to the event.  Western Mass News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Breck family has renewed its commitment to AIC by funding two scholarships for Springfield students with financial need and by contributing $100,000 to restore Breck Hall's brick façade. The donation reinforces their long-standing local legacy — reflecting decades of support — and boosts both academic aid and campus safety.  BusinessWest

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Sarno and housing officials warned that HUD-planned cuts to permanent supportive housing funds threatened to leave thousands at risk after a proposed change on Nov. 13 was withdrawn on Dec. 8. They cautioned that funding losses may increase unsheltered numbers as winter cold continues.  The Reminder

  • Local fitness expert Ashley Brodeur from Active Lifestyle Fitness in Agawam advises residents to combine cardio, strength and mobility workouts to meet their 2026 exercise resolutions; she recommends small, consistent changes (like 20-to-30-minute walks a few days a week) to boost overall health.  Western Mass News
