About this event
The Satipatthana Sutta: A Five-Week Course on tthe Foundations of Mindfulness, with Michael Grady and Doug Kremm
Five Tuesdays
Oct 20-Nov 17
The Satipatthana Sutta has stood at the center of Buddhist theory and practice for more than two millennia, and it remains the most detailed set of meditation instructions the Buddha left us. In this five-week course, we will study the sutta closely and explore how its teachings can inform our practice today. Our approach will be both text-based and practice-oriented: each week, we will work systematically through the Buddha’s instructions, combining close reading with meditation and reflection.
We will spend the first week getting oriented, learning how the discourse opens, reflecting on the core instruction (the “refrain”) that repeats at every stage, and exploring what the Buddha meant by “mindfulness.” After that, we’ll devote one week to each of the four foundations: body, feeling, mind, and dhammas. Sessions will include guided meditation, instruction and practices drawn from the sutta, and time for reflection and Q&A.
This course is co-taught by Michael Grady and Doug Kremm. The Satipatthana Sutta has played an important role in each of their paths, and they are excited to share the many ways this ancient text can deepen our understanding and practice.
This course will be held in person at IWM.
